ABOUT ME

I’m Ayke, a Dutch product designer

I grew up in an old house where there was always a lot of renovation work to do. Wood became a material that I worked a lot with and started to love more and more. It’s a living material, which can change when the surroundings change.

I like to work in a team. Reflection and feedback are important and contribute to a better result. You can learn from and inspire each other. I find it particularly inspiring to work within a multidisciplinary team. During my internships at Sophisti and Hakvoort Professional BV, I worked within multidisciplinary teams.

Skills

Next to drawing by hand, I’ve learned to work with different 3D drawing programs over the years.

  • SolidWorks (during my studies Industrial Design and Product Design)
  • Inventor (during my internship at Haktvoort Professional BV)
  • Fusion 360 (during my work at Sophisti)
  • SketchUp (for Rosbach Architects)

I also work with the following Adobe programs:

  • Photoshop
  • InDesign
  • Illustrator

I have experience with the 3D printer (Ultimaker).

Internships

During my studies I had two apprenticeships: at Sophisti from September 2013 until January 2014 and at Hakvoort Professional BV from September 2015 until March 2016

Sophisti is a small company with big projects. Even though only three to five people work at the company they make and design very technical products. Sophisti creates interactive products, products that communicate with each other and games that combine iPads with board games. I’ve always been impressed by how much knowledge the studio has in different fields. During my internship I worked on the physical products that housed the technical and electronic parts, like a joystick that communicates with an I-pad and a special Lego brick.

Hakvoort Professional BV is a large company, which makes and sells professional kitchens. In the Netherlands they have six showrooms where they sell various brands. The most valuable thing I learned during the apprenticeship was how to work with various groups and to involve them in the development of a product. The production workers look at a product differently from the management or the salesman. This made designing for Hakvoort extra challenging. The product I designed for them, an industrial fryer for a professional kitchen, was a success. It was presented at trade fairs in the Netherlands and Belgium and has gone into production. https://www.hakpro.nl/vivo-bakwanden.html
